Over 100 talented young girls from the Bono East and Ahafo regions of Ghana were hosted by MTN Ghana at their iconic MTN House to celebrate this year's National Girls-in-ICT (GIICT) Day.

The event presented an opportunity for MTN Ghana's Women in Technology, who work across various departments within MTN Ghana’s ICT and technology departments, to volunteer their time and expertise to provide mentorship to the girls.

The mentoring session allowed the girls to engage directly with their mentors, asking questions, seeking guidance, and learning from real-life experiences.

Addressing reporters in Accra, the Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Adwoa Wiafe revealed that MTN Ghana is collaborating with the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization to support gender equality by improving and enhancing the knowledge and skills of Ghanaian girls in ICT.

“This is an initiative of the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization, and we are supporting the ministry to help improve and enhance their knowledge and skills in ICT to ensure gender equality,” she said.

The Girls-in-ICT Initiative, an international endeavor championed by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), has been a beacon of hope since its inception in 2012. The initiative, embraced by ITU Member States including Ghana, aims to bridge the gender gap in the male-dominated ICT sector.

Its core purpose is to introduce young girls to the vast array of opportunities within the world of information and communication technology, paving the way for them to explore ICT-related careers with confidence and enthusiasm.

The Ministry of Communications and Digitalization has celebrated the Girls-in-ICT initiative since its launch in 2012 by targeting young girls and young ladies at the Basic, Secondary and Tertiary levels to enhance and direct attention to ICT careers, reducing the barriers to creating access and improving online safety.
