The Acting Director-General of the Regional Africa Satellite Communication Organization (RASCOM), Timothy Nii Ashong will be participating in one of the Space in Africa webinar series as a panel member to discuss Satellite technology and its vast potential for bridging the continent’s digital gap.

The webinar which is scheduled to be held on Friday 20th October 2023 on the theme” The Role of Satellite in Building a Connected Africa, will have other distinguished panel members including the General Manager, National Space Programme Management Office, Dr. Zolana Joao and the CEO of Nigeria Communication Satellite Limited, Engr Tukur Mohammed Lawal contributing to the discussion.

According to the organizers, Satellite technology has emerged as a crucial solution to address this digital divide, and it can cover vast and remote regions, offering connectivity in places where traditional terrestrial infrastructure is not cost-effective or feasible.

It noted that while urban centres in Africa have made notable strides in internet access and connectivity, rural and remote areas still lack reliable access to the digital world, adding that this disparity has implications for education, healthcare, economic development, and overall quality of life.

Space Africa, believes that through its webinar many people would not only be educated about satellite’s critical role in expanding connectivity across Africa but also provide an in-depth understanding of how satellite technology works and how it can effectively reach remote and underserved areas.

“This webinar will foster meaningful discussions among industry experts, policymakers, and thought leaders. By bringing together diverse perspectives, we can identify common challenges, share best practices, and explore collaborative opportunities to advance connectivity initiatives,” it stated.

“Building on the discussions during the webinar, we hope to facilitate partnerships and collaborations. These partnerships may involve governments, NGOs, academia, and industry players, all working to leverage satellite technology to benefit Africa’s development.”
