South Africa’s leading mobile network operator by market
share, Vodacom, said its transition from a traditional telecommunication
company to a Technology Company aims to build an organization for the future,
underpinned by digital innovation and agility.
The Managing Director of Vodacom South Africa, Sitho
Mdlalose, who disclosed this during a speech at the Credit Guarantee Insurance
Corporation of Africa Limited Spring Conference 2022, on the theme: “The
Resurgence,” explained that the move is necessitated by the evolving nature of the telecom space, where telecom
players around the world are repositioning themselves to focus on new, value-added
revenue sources that leverage their large user bases.
“The drive to connect the unconnected, especially across
emerging markets, is going to be a dominant feature, with innovation being a
key driver,” he stressed.
Leading the
telecom industry with a 45.77 million subscriber base representing a 42 percent
market share as of December 31st, 2021, Vodacom Group believes its
evolution from a TelCo to a data-driven TechCo is well on track.
In its
recent Integrated Report 2022, Vodacom Group Chief Executive Officer Shameel
Aziz noted that through its multi-product strategy – called the system of
advantage – Vodacom deliver diversified, differentiated offerings through three
primary strategic ambitions and ten drivers of success to create sustainable
value.
“To maintain
our position as a leading pan-African TechCo, we continue to enhance our Big
Data capabilities. We already leverage Big Data to drive personalization and
nano-sized products at scale. In South Africa, we complete 5 million Airtime
Advance transactions a day. We see Big Data as the engine that powers our
digital ecosystem and will accelerate our capabilities across CVM, loyalty, and
financial services,” he said.
