The
Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Nomalungelo Gina, has
said South Africa’s participation in Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s working
visit to India underscores the country’s commitment to strengthening
long-standing bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in science,
technology and innovation.
In
a statement shared during the visit, Dr Gina said the engagement reaffirms the
historical and cultural ties between South Africa and India, while also
highlighting India’s growing role in global affairs and its importance as a
strategic investment and development partner for the African continent.
She
noted that the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation is using the
visit to advance South Africa’s strategic priorities in science, technology and
innovation, while deepening institutional partnerships that support inclusive
development and economic growth.

Dr
Gina said South Africa and India share a strong foundation built over many
years of cooperation in science, technology and innovation, and that both
countries are now seeking to move the relationship towards a more
implementation-focused phase.
She
outlined key areas of intended collaboration, including hydrogen and renewable
energy, advanced manufacturing, Indigenous Knowledge Systems, biotechnology,
astronomy, digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence and quantum
technologies.
According
to her, India’s rapidly expanding innovation ecosystem presents significant
opportunities for partnership, investment, research collaboration and
technology transfer, which could support South Africa’s broader development
agenda.
Dr
Gina further indicated that the visit provides a platform to strengthen
institutional linkages between the two countries, unlock new areas of
cooperation, and enhance South Africa’s ability to benefit from global
innovation networks.
She
added that engagements with Indian institutions, innovation agencies, business
leaders and investors will be central to efforts aimed at advancing shared
priorities and building a more inclusive and sustainable future through science
and technology cooperation.
