The
European Union has introduced a new Tech Sovereignty Package aimed at
strengthening Europe’s control over its digital infrastructure, data systems,
and technology supply chains.
The
announcement was made by Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Tech
Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, who described the initiative as a major
step toward securing Europe’s technological future and enhancing its
competitiveness in critical digital sectors.
The
package outlines a coordinated strategy focused on advancing semiconductor
capabilities, improving resilience and autonomy in cloud and artificial
intelligence systems, and strengthening the region’s open-source ecosystem in
key industries.
It
also includes plans to integrate data centres more sustainably into Europe’s
energy systems, supporting both environmental goals and digital expansion.
Key
components of the initiative include the Chips Act 2.0, the Cloud and AI
Development Act, the EU Open Source Strategy, and a Strategic Roadmap for
Digitalisation and AI in Energy.
According
to the European Commission, the framework is designed to create a more
interconnected and resilient digital ecosystem by aligning efforts across
chips, infrastructure, software, cloud services, and artificial intelligence
development.
