The Office of Kenya’s Special Envoy for Climate Change has held discussions with the Maritime Organisation for Eastern, Southern and Northern Africa (MOESNA) aimed at strengthening collaboration between climate and maritime institutions to support sustainable development across the region.
The talks took place during a courtesy visit by MOESNA Secretary General Kassim Mpaata to the Office of the Special Envoy for Climate Change, where both parties examined the growing linkages between maritime development, climate action, and economic transformation.
The engagement focused on the importance of aligning maritime priorities with broader climate and development objectives as African countries pursue a just and equitable transition to more sustainable economies.
Participants highlighted the critical role of the maritime sector in supporting regional trade, improving port and transport corridor efficiency, enhancing maritime safety and security, building institutional capacity, and promoting marine environmental protection.
The discussions also underscored the need for closer cooperation in addressing emerging challenges and opportunities, including green shipping, maritime decarbonisation, climate-resilient port infrastructure, and access to climate finance for sustainable maritime projects.
Both sides acknowledged that stronger coordination between climate and maritime stakeholders will be essential to advancing Africa’s development goals while responding effectively to the impacts of climate change.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to fostering collaborative and forward-looking approaches that support sustainable maritime growth, environmental stewardship, and climate resilience across the continent.
