The
Inaugural Indigenous Knowledge-based Technology Innovation Investment Summit
has officially opened in Boksburg, bringing together stakeholders from
government, academia, and industry to explore the commercialisation of
indigenous knowledge systems.
The
first day of the summit began with a welcome address by Dr Kenny Tenza, Acting
Deputy Director-General at the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation
(DSTI). The event focuses on strengthening the institutionalisation of
indigenous knowledge (IK) innovation, promoting public-private partnerships for
blended financing of research infrastructure, and enhancing local manufacturing
and industrialisation through IK value chains.
The
programme also featured an interactive panel discussion on advancing indigenous
knowledge in science and technology, followed by a pitching session where
entrepreneurs presented IK-based business ideas to potential investors and
partners.
The
summit is being coordinated by the DSTI in partnership with the National
Science and Technology Forum, Innovation Hub, University of North-West,
University of Venda, and University of Limpopo.
Organisers
say the initiative is aimed at unlocking the economic potential of indigenous
knowledge systems while supporting innovation, research, and sustainable
industrial development in South Africa.
