Orange
DRC has marked World Environment Day with a community-driven environmental
initiative aimed at promoting sustainable waste management and reinforcing
corporate responsibility in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The
activity, led by Orange RDC, took place in the municipality of Gombe, where
employees, local residents, and business operators participated in a
coordinated clean-up exercise focused on collecting plastic waste from public
spaces and drainage systems.
The
initiative was officially opened with remarks from the Chief Executive Officer
of Orange DRC, Brutus Sadou Diakite, who emphasized the role of private sector
actors in supporting environmental protection and building more resilient urban
communities.
Following
the clean-up operation, the collected waste was sorted and transferred to a
specialised recycling partner, contributing to efforts to strengthen circular
economy practices and improve urban waste management systems in the city.
As
part of the campaign, Orange DRC also conducted sensitisation sessions with
shop owners and residents on responsible environmental behaviour, with a
particular focus on reducing the use of single-use plastics and improving waste
disposal practices.
The
company stated that the initiative aligns with its broader corporate social
responsibility strategy and supports the United Nations Sustainable Development
Goals, particularly those relating to sustainable cities and responsible
consumption and production.
