The Ethiopian Artificial
Intelligence Institute and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have held a
bilateral meeting aimed at strengthening cooperation in technology development
and supporting Ethiopia’s digital transformation agenda.
The discussions took place
during a working visit by a delegation led by Ankur Vora, representing the
Foundation’s Africa and India Offices, to the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence
Institute.
According to officials, the
engagement is intended to open new areas of collaboration focused on advancing
Ethiopia’s digital economy through the application of artificial intelligence
and related technologies.
The Director General of the
Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute, Dr. Werku Gachena, briefed the
delegation on the country’s progress in applying artificial intelligence to
support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
He highlighted ongoing
initiatives where AI technologies are being deployed in key sectors including
agriculture, health, finance, and education, noting their role in improving
efficiency and expanding access to essential services.
The discussions also
explored potential areas of collaboration, including the development of cloud
infrastructure, workforce training and capacity building, and support for
technology startups.
Both parties emphasized the
importance of sustained engagement to strengthen Ethiopia’s innovation
ecosystem and accelerate the adoption of digital solutions across priority
sectors.
The Ethiopian Artificial
Intelligence Institute, a government center of excellence, is mandated to drive
the country’s transition toward a digital economy, while the Bill & Melinda
Gates Foundation is a global philanthropic organization focused on health,
education, agriculture, and poverty reduction.
Officials indicated that the
partnership is expected to contribute to long-term efforts aimed at leveraging
artificial intelligence to support inclusive development and national
transformation.
