The International Mobile
Satellite Organization has participated in contingency exercises conducted by
the two International Maritime Organization-recognized Global Maritime Distress
and Safety System (GMDSS) satellite service providers, Viasat Inmarsat and
Iridium Communications, to verify their ability to restore critical maritime
safety services within internationally mandated timelines.
The exercises were designed
to demonstrate the providers’ capacity to restore GMDSS services within one
hour, in accordance with standards established by the International Maritime
Organization.
According to IMSO, the tests
form an important part of the oversight framework established by the IMO to
ensure the continued availability, reliability, and resilience of maritime
safety communications worldwide.
The successful completion of
the exercises confirmed that critical distress and safety communication
services can be rapidly restored in the event of a major disruption, providing
assurance to the international maritime community and supporting the safety of
vessels operating at sea.
Satellite communications
play a central role in the global maritime safety architecture, particularly
for ships operating beyond the coverage of terrestrial communication networks.
These systems enable vessels to receive maritime safety information, maintain
connectivity with safety services, and transmit distress alerts to search and
rescue authorities when emergencies occur.
IMSO noted that the
exercises highlighted the technical expertise and professionalism of the teams
involved in maintaining the resilience of maritime communication systems that
support seafarers around the world.
The organization reaffirmed
its commitment to ensuring that the GMDSS continues to provide dependable and
resilient services for the global maritime sector, emphasizing the importance
of robust satellite communications in protecting lives at sea and supporting
international search and rescue operations.
