The Department of Science,
Technology and Innovation has underscored the importance of international
collaboration in advancing research and innovation following the successful
hosting of the South Africa-China Young Scientist Symposium at the CSIR Convention
Centre.
The symposium brought
together emerging researchers, academic leaders, and diplomatic representatives
from both countries for a focused engagement aimed at strengthening bilateral
cooperation in science, technology, and innovation.
Discussions at the event
centered on youth empowerment, skills transfer, and the role of joint
scientific research in addressing complex global challenges. Participants
emphasized the importance of nurturing the next generation of scientists
through structured collaboration and knowledge exchange between South Africa
and China.
A key highlight of the
symposium was the announcement of expanded joint research funding, which will
now support up to 30 initiatives annually. This development reflects a
deepening commitment by both countries to strengthen scientific collaboration
and accelerate innovation-driven development.
Officials noted that the
strengthened partnership demonstrates how international cooperation can be
leveraged to advance research that contributes to social progress, economic
development, and inclusive growth.
The symposium was described
as a milestone in South Africa-China bilateral relations, reinforcing a shared
commitment to using science and innovation as tools for addressing societal
challenges and promoting sustainable development.
