The National Commission on Research, Science and Technology (NCRST) has strengthened its artificial intelligence and digital innovation capabilities through participation in the Hack4Dev Regional Innovation Hackathon, held in Cape Town.

The event brought together participants from 14 African countries and served as a platform for advancing machine learning, digital innovation and data-driven problem-solving across the continent. NCRST was represented by Software Developer Mr. Rikurora Karamata, who took part in technical sessions, collaborative activities and peer-learning engagements throughout the programme.

The initiative formed part of a broader train-the-trainer capacity-building programme designed to enhance NCRST’s technical expertise in emerging technologies, with a focus on machine learning, data adaptation and innovation-led development solutions.

Participants engaged in intensive technical workshops and collaborative discussions aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and sharing practical approaches to addressing development challenges through technology. The programme also provided opportunities for knowledge exchange among innovators, researchers and technical experts from across Africa.

Following the Hack4Dev Regional Innovation Hackathon, NCRST announced plans to host the next Regional Innovation Hackathon in Namibia in August 2026. The event will be organised in partnership with local institutions and stakeholders, with final dates and participation details to be confirmed.

The upcoming hackathon is expected to bring together developers, researchers, entrepreneurs and innovators to develop solutions to local and regional challenges using digital technologies, machine learning and emerging tools. The initiative aims to strengthen Namibia’s innovation ecosystem, enhance skills development and promote collaboration across Africa’s science and technology landscape.

NCRST said the programme reflects its commitment to advancing research, science and technology as key drivers of sustainable development and regional innovation capacity.
