The African Medicines Agency
(AMA) has reinforced its partnership with the European Medicines Agency (EMA)
following a high-level visit by an AMA delegation to the EMA headquarters in
Amsterdam.
The visit, which took place
from 22 to 26 June 2026, formed part of ongoing efforts by the two continental
regulatory agencies to deepen collaboration through technical cooperation,
knowledge exchange, and mutual learning.
During the engagement,
officials from both organizations discussed shared priorities aimed at
strengthening regulatory systems and supporting the development of efficient,
modern medicines regulation across Africa and Europe.
Key discussions focused on
digital transformation initiatives, support for pharmaceutical innovators and
local manufacturers, and the adoption of best practices to improve regulatory
efficiency and effectiveness.
As part of the visit, AMA
Director-General Dr. Delese Mimi Darko delivered an interactive presentation to
EMA staff outlining the progress made in operationalizing the African Medicines
Agency and highlighting opportunities to further expand collaboration between
the two organizations.
The discussions also
explored ways to leverage the expertise of both agencies to strengthen
regulatory capacity, promote innovation, and enhance access to quality-assured
medical products.
AMA noted that its
partnership with the European Medicines Agency remains an important component
of its efforts to build robust regulatory systems capable of safeguarding
public health while supporting the growth of Africa's pharmaceutical sector.
The agency said continued
cooperation with the EMA will contribute to advancing regulatory excellence and
improving access to safe, effective, and quality-assured medicines and medical
products across both regions.
The visit reflects the
shared commitment of the African Medicines Agency and the European Medicines
Agency to strengthening international regulatory cooperation and promoting
harmonized approaches that support public health, innovation, and sustainable healthcare
systems.
