German Accelerator is expanding its engagement across Africa with the launch of its first West Africa cohort, aimed at helping German startups explore market opportunities, build partnerships and strengthen connections with African innovation ecosystems.

The initiative, known as Kickstart: Global Mindset Activation – West Africa, brought together 21 German startups in Berlin for a programme focused on market insights, mentorship and strategies for international growth, with particular attention to opportunities in Ghana and Nigeria.

The programme forms part of German Accelerator’s broader Africa activities, which began earlier this year with the official launch of its Africa engagement through a networking event in Berlin focused on strengthening German-African economic cooperation.

Since the launch, eight German CleanTech and energy startups have participated in the organisation’s South Africa Market Discovery programme, where they explored business opportunities and developed local connections within the South African market.

During the West Africa cohort programme, participating startups engaged with experts and mentors to better understand regional market dynamics, identify potential partnerships and explore pathways for expansion into African markets.

The programme concluded with a networking event that brought together startups, partners and representatives from the German-African business community. The event was opened by Stefan Drews from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.

German Accelerator said the growing interest in Africa reflects the potential for deeper collaboration between German and African innovation ecosystems, particularly in areas such as technology, clean energy and entrepreneurship.

The organisation’s Africa activities will continue with participation in the upcoming German-African Business Summit (GABS 2026), scheduled to take place from 23 to 25 November in Accra, Ghana, where business leaders, policymakers and ecosystem partners are expected to discuss opportunities for trade, investment and innovation cooperation between Germany and Africa.
