Botswana has taken a major
step towards strengthening sustainable electronic waste management following
the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Botswana
Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA) and the Department of Environmental
Protection.
The agreement was signed
during the official launch of the Botswana National E-Waste Management
Strategy, marking a collaborative effort to address the growing challenges
associated with electronic waste and promote responsible management of
discarded electronic equipment.
The partnership is expected
to enhance coordination between the telecommunications sector and environmental
authorities in developing effective approaches to e-waste collection,
recycling, disposal and public awareness.
Speaking at the event, BOCRA
Acting Chief Executive Officer Maitseo Ratladi reaffirmed the authority’s
commitment to environmental sustainability, inclusive digital empowerment and
building trusted partnerships that create meaningful impact for communities.
The launch of the national
strategy reflects Botswana’s broader efforts to align digital development with
environmental protection by ensuring that the expansion of technology and
connectivity is supported by sustainable practices.
Through the collaboration,
BOCRA and the Department of Environmental Protection aim to strengthen
stakeholder engagement and encourage responsible electronic waste practices
among consumers, businesses and institutions.
