The Kingdom of Eswatini is advancing efforts to strengthen its digital security, data protection and emergency response capabilities through the ratification of three key international legal instruments.

Minister of Information, Communications and Technology Senator Savannah Maziya presented the importance of ratifying the African Union Convention on Cyber Security and Personal Data Protection, also known as the Malabo Convention, the Convention on Cybercrime (Budapest Convention), and the Tampere Convention on the Provision of Telecommunication Resources for Disaster Mitigation and Relief Operations during a Senators’ Workshop on the Ratification of International Legal Instruments.

The workshop was hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and focused on increasing awareness of the strategic value of adopting international agreements that support national development and cooperation.

Senator Maziya said ratifying the conventions would strengthen Eswatini’s position as an investment-friendly country by enhancing cybersecurity frameworks, protecting personal data, improving international cooperation in combating cybercrime and increasing the country’s preparedness for disaster situations.

The Malabo Convention is expected to support the development of a secure and trusted digital environment, promote electronic commerce, strengthen data protection measures and contribute to regional digital integration across Africa.

The Budapest Convention would enhance Eswatini’s ability to prevent, investigate and prosecute cybercrime by improving cooperation with international partners and providing law enforcement agencies with stronger tools to respond to evolving cyber threats.

The Tampere Convention would support faster deployment of telecommunications resources during emergencies and disasters, enabling improved coordination with international relief organisations and strengthening national resilience.

The Minister emphasised that ratification of the three instruments reflects Eswatini’s commitment to building a secure, resilient and digitally enabled nation while supporting economic growth, protecting citizens and strengthening collaboration with regional and global partners.
