Senegal's Telecommunications
and Postal Regulatory Authority (ARTP) and the National Agency for Maritime
Affairs (ANAM) have renewed their partnership agreement to strengthen maritime
safety through improved management of radio frequencies and maritime communication
systems.
The agreement was renewed
during a workshop on the management of radio frequencies, Maritime Mobile
Service Identity (MMSI) numbers and call signs, attended by ARTP Director
General Dahirou Thiam and ANAM Director General Bécaye Diop.
Speaking at the event, Thiam
highlighted the critical role of radio frequencies in protecting lives at sea,
noting that effective spectrum management is essential for maintaining reliable
maritime communications, preventing harmful interference and supporting search
and rescue operations.
He said the proper
allocation and management of radio frequencies contribute significantly to
safeguarding people and property by ensuring uninterrupted communication
between vessels and maritime authorities.
The workshop also focused on
the management of MMSI numbers, which enable the rapid identification of
vessels and provide access to key information about ships, their communication
equipment and crew.
By renewing their
cooperation agreement, ARTP and ANAM reaffirmed their commitment to
strengthening maritime security and enhancing collaboration in response to
evolving technologies and the growing use of digital systems in the maritime
sector.
The renewed partnership is
expected to support the development of a modern and effective governance
framework for maritime communications and safety in Senegal.
