Zimbabwe has commissioned a
new Industrial Incubation Centre and Specialist Medical Centre at the
University of Zimbabwe, marking a significant step in strengthening innovation,
entrepreneurship and access to specialist healthcare.
The facilities were
officially commissioned by President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa during a
ceremony attended by government officials, including the Minister of
Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Hon. Tatenda
Mavetera.
Speaking after the event,
Hon. Mavetera said the new Industrial Incubation Centre reflects Zimbabwe's
commitment to developing home-grown innovation by providing a platform for
technology startups to transform ideas into commercially viable businesses.
She noted that several
startups incubated at the facility are already developing solutions powered by
embedded artificial intelligence and are preparing to enter the market,
demonstrating the country's growing capacity to build indigenous digital
technologies.
The Minister described the
initiative as an important milestone in empowering young innovators and
supporting the development of a knowledge-based economy driven by local talent
and entrepreneurship.
President Mnangagwa, in his
address, emphasized the need for Zimbabwe's education system to directly
support national development objectives while ensuring that the country's
healthcare sector delivers affordable and accessible specialist services to citizens.
He also cautioned against practices that limit access to quality healthcare.
The commissioning of the two
facilities underscores Zimbabwe's broader efforts to integrate innovation,
research, technology and healthcare into its national development agenda, while
creating opportunities for young entrepreneurs and strengthening the country's
digital economy.
Government officials said
the new centres will contribute to advancing innovation, commercialising
research, improving healthcare delivery and fostering sustainable
socio-economic development through locally developed solutions.
