Kenya’s technology, media,
government, research and civil society leaders have held discussions on
strengthening trust and integrity in the information ecosystem as artificial
intelligence continues to reshape how information is created, distributed and consumed.
The Media and Technology
Roundtable was co-convened by Kenya’s Special Envoy on Technology, Ambassador
Philip Thigo, ahead of The Trust Summit 2026 in Nairobi. The engagement brought
together stakeholders from media, technology, government, research and civil
society.
Discussions focused on the
systems and safeguards needed to strengthen trust in an increasingly AI-driven
information environment. Participants examined issues including content
provenance, crisis information protocols, greater transparency and accountability
from digital platforms, and stronger evaluation of AI systems in African
languages and contexts.
Thigo noted that generative
AI is accelerating the production of synthetic content, while algorithms are
increasingly influencing what people see and how they understand events.
The roundtable therefore
considered the implications of these developments for the integrity of
information and the ability of citizens to assess and engage with information
in an evolving digital environment.
Participants also
highlighted the respective roles of media organisations, technology companies,
governments and civil society in strengthening the integrity of the information
ecosystem while preserving citizens’ agency.
The discussions will feed
into The Trust Summit in Nairobi and contribute to wider work on information
integrity, responsible technology and public trust.
