The Governor of the Bank of
Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, has called for a balance between innovation,
financial stability and trust in developing Ghana's virtual asset ecosystem.
Speaking at the Africa
Virtual Assets Summit (AVAS) 2026 in Accra, Dr Asiama highlighted the potential
of virtual assets and tokenisation to deepen financial inclusion, improve
cross-border payments and create new financing opportunities.
Delivering a goodwill
message at the summit, the Governor emphasised the importance of building trust
through effective governance and responsible operations as Ghana explores
opportunities in the virtual asset sector.
“Trust is not the opposite
of innovation; it is what allows innovation to grow, and it is earned through
the way innovation is governed and operated,” he said.
Dr Asiama's remarks
underscored the need to ensure that the development of Ghana's virtual asset
ecosystem takes into account financial stability and public confidence while
supporting technological innovation.
He highlighted the
opportunities presented by virtual assets and tokenisation to expand access to
financial services, facilitate cross-border transactions and unlock new sources
of financing.
The summit brought together
stakeholders in the virtual asset ecosystem to discuss developments and
opportunities in the sector, as countries across Africa explore the role of
emerging financial technologies in their economies.
