Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute partners with Ministry of Justice to enhance criminal intelligence management

Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute has signed an agreement with the Ministry of Justice to develop an integrated criminal intelligence management system. The contract was finalized in a ceremony attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Justice and the Federal Police, featuring the collaborative effort to modernize and enhance the country’s judicial capabilities.

During the event, Dr. Werku Gachena, the Director-General of the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute, outlined the vision for the new system, noting that the integrated criminal intelligence management system will be designed to offer multiple services in various languages, making it accessible to a broader range of citizens. One of the key features of the system, he said will enable individuals to track the status of their legal cases, thereby increasing transparency and providing additional support for the justice system.

The initiative aims to address longstanding issues within the justice sector, as noted by Jeremiah Manebir, the Minister of State for Institutional Building and Reform at the Ministry of Justice. He expressed optimism about the potential of this new system to establish accountable, transparent, effective, and time-efficient practices within the judiciary. “This system is a hopeful solution to the challenges faced in the justice sector,” he stated.

Zelem Mengisté, the Deputy Commissioner General and Head of the General Department of Criminal Investigation of the Federal Police, also shared insights on the significance of the initiative. He stated that the integrated system lays a historic foundation for a safe and effective justice system by overseeing the entire process, from investigation through to judicial delivery.

According to officials’ plans are already underway to complete the development of the integrated criminal intelligence management system within the next year.
