The Chief Executive
Office of Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia PLC, Wim Vanhelleputte has
reiterated Safaricom Ethiopia's unwavering commitment to bridging the
connectivity gap across the country, emphasizing the company’s dedication to
rapid infrastructure development.
Speaking during
a panel discussion at the launch of the GSMA report on Driving Digital
Transformation of the Economy in Ethiopia, Mr.Vanhelleputte outlined
Safaricom's strategic efforts to accelerate Ethiopia's digital transformation.
He highlighted
the critical role of device financing and Digital ID in enhancing access to
digital services, particularly for government-related activities, and stressed
that these key enablers are fundamental to delivering vital government services
and promoting inclusion. “Cementing our commitment, we are investing and
building a robust network infrastructure to support our Fast Data Network,
ensuring reliable connectivity for all Ethiopians,” he remarked.
The Safaricom
CEO then outlined the recommendations of the GSMA report, reinforcing the role
of telecoms in driving meaningful change and acknowledged the need for
collaboration within the telecom ecosystem to ensure all Ethiopians can reap
the benefits of the digital economy.
“Our mission
extends beyond just building a fast and reliable network. Through collaborative
infrastructure development, promoting financial inclusion, and striving to
reduce barriers to access, we aim to offer affordable devices and invest in
digital literacy and skills training,” Vanhelleputte
explained. “By partnering for innovation, we are dedicated to becoming a
catalyst for Ethiopia’s socio-economic development.”
Safaricom’s
efforts to enhance connectivity and foster digital literacy across Ethiopia
align with the broader objectives of promoting sustainable development. The
company’s strategic investments are expected to unlock opportunities in various
