Cabinet
Secretary at the Ministry of Information, Communications, and The Digital
Economy, Dr. Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u has welcomed Dr. Robert Habeck, German
Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action,
along with his delegation, to the KenGen Olkaria Geothermal Spa. The visit is aimed
at strengthening the partnership that exist between the two nations, a
relationship built on shared values and a mutual commitment to sustainable
development.
Over
the years, Germany has provided vital support through funding, technical
expertise, and innovative solutions, enabling Kenya to ascend as a global
leader in renewable energy. Projects like the Olkaria Geothermal Complex stand
as living monuments to this partnership, reflecting the alignment of both
nations’ priorities with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs) and the Paris Agreement. Kenya’s renewable energy sector is a
cornerstone of its climate action strategy, driven by an acute awareness of the
challenges posed by the global climate crisis. The nation has experienced
prolonged droughts that strain hydrological energy systems and threaten food
security, underscoring the urgency for sustainable energy solutions.
Currently,
93% of Kenya’s electricity comes from renewable sources, with geothermal energy
leading the charge. It’s green energy sector offers significant opportunities
for investment, with untapped potential in geothermal, wind, and solar energy
projects. The establishment of Kenya’s Green Hydrogen Strategy and Guidelines
positions the nation as a pioneer in this emerging technology, creating avenues
for collaboration with international partners.
Dr.
Ndung’u extended an invitation to Germany and other global partners to join
Kenya in unlocking these opportunities. Through continued collaboration, both
nations can achieve their energy goals while contributing to global energy
security, economic resilience, and sustainable development.
