Uganda ICT intellectual property guidelines signed to protect innovators and boost digital economy

The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of ICT & National Guidance, Dr. Aminah Zawedde has officially signed the Uganda ICT Intellectual Property (IP) Guidelines during the 4th Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) meeting of the Uganda-Japan Connect (UJ-Connect) Project. The signing marks a significant step in protecting the intellectual property rights of Ugandan innovators while fostering a more dynamic and competitive digital ecosystem.

The newly launched ICT IP Guidelines are designed to safeguard the intellectual property of local tech innovators, ensuring they receive proper recognition and financial rewards for their contributions. By establishing a structured framework for IP protection, commercialization, and the wider adoption of locally developed ICT solutions, the guidelines aim to drive economic growth, job creation, and enhanced livelihoods.

Beyond individual benefits, the guidelines are expected to have a far-reaching impact on Uganda’s ICT sector. They will help the government maximize returns on its ICT investments by ensuring that digital solutions developed within Uganda can be effectively scaled, commercialized, and utilized across various sectors. This, in turn, is set to boost competitiveness, attract investment, and accelerate Uganda’s innovation-driven economy.

Dr. Aminah Zawedde noted the need for all stakeholders—including innovators, entrepreneurs, government agencies, and researchers—to actively engage with the guidelines and leverage the opportunities they provide. “I encourage all stakeholders to familiarize themselves with these guidelines and seize the opportunities they offer.”
