The Department
of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT) has concluded its Ministerial
Workshop on Affordable Smart Devices marking a significant step toward
addressing one of the most pressing challenges in Africa’s digital
transformation journey: device affordability. The workshop brought together
government officials, industry leaders, and stakeholders to explore solutions
for making smart devices more accessible and affordable, thereby fostering
digital inclusion and unlocking economic opportunities across South Africa and
the broader African region.
The discussions
highlighted the critical role of affordable smart devices in bridging the
digital divide and enabling more individuals and businesses to participate in
the digital economy. Despite significant progress in expanding internet access
and digital services, the high cost of smartphones and other smart devices
remains a major barrier, particularly for low-income households and underserved
communities.
The Ministerial
Workshop emphasized the importance of collaboration between governments,
private sector players, and international organizations in addressing the
challenge of device affordability. Participants shared insights and best
practices, exploring innovative solutions such as subsidies, financing models,
and partnerships with device manufacturers to reduce costs and increase
accessibility.
“The
affordability of smart devices is a key enabler of digital inclusion,” said a representative from the DCDT. “By working together, we
can create a more inclusive digital ecosystem that empowers individuals and
businesses to thrive in the digital economy.”
