Kenya’s Office
of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) has been recognized as the Leading
Public Sector Entity in Emerging Technology Utilization at the Digital
Transformation Public Sector Forum and Awards 2025 (DTPS). The award, presented
in recognition of the ODPC’s groundbreaking implementation of an AI-powered
chatbot, highlights the agency’s efforts to leverage technology to enhance data
protection awareness and compliance across Kenya.
The Digital
Transformation Public Sector Forum and Awards, organized by GreyDale Africa in
collaboration with the Ministry of Information Technology & The Digital
Economy, celebrates excellence in digital innovation within the public sector.
The event brings together leaders from various government sectors, technology
specialists, and innovators to showcase transformative initiatives that are
driving progress across industries such as health, education, ICT,
communication, energy, transport, financial services, and e-commerce.
The ODPC’s
award-winning chatbot is a testament to the power of artificial intelligence
(AI) in driving digital transformation. Developed with the support of Deutsche
Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the chatbot serves
as an innovative tool for creating awareness about data protection, fostering
compliance, and providing accessible information to the public in an efficient
and cost-effective manner.
The chatbot,
which is integrated into the ODPC’s digital platforms, enables users to access
real-time information about data protection laws, regulations, and best
practices. It also provides guidance on compliance requirements, answers
frequently asked questions, and offers personalized support to individuals and
organizations. By leveraging AI, the ODPC has streamlined its operations,
improved service delivery, and enhanced public engagement on critical data
protection issues.
The recognition
of the ODPC at the DTPS Awards is a significant milestone for Kenya’s digital
transformation journey. It highlights the agency’s proactive approach to
adopting emerging technologies to address complex challenges and improve
service delivery. The chatbot’s success demonstrates how AI can be harnessed to
create impactful solutions that benefit both the public and private sectors.
In a statement,
the ODPC expressed its gratitude for the recognition and reaffirmed its
commitment to driving innovation in data protection. “We are honored to
receive this award, which reflects our dedication to leveraging technology to
enhance data protection awareness and compliance. Our chatbot is a powerful
tool for empowering citizens and organizations with the knowledge they need to
safeguard personal data. This achievement would not have been possible without
the support of our partners, including GIZ, and the hard work of our team.”
The Digital
Transformation Public Sector Forum and Awards provided a platform for leaders
and innovators to share insights, exchange ideas, and explore opportunities for
collaboration. The event showcased cutting-edge technologies and transformative
