BasiGo, a
leading electric mobility company, has announced the delivery of 28 new
electric buses to Rwanda in April and May 2025. This marks the largest-ever
shipment of electric buses into the country and represents a significant
milestone in BasiGo’s commitment to delivering 100 electric buses in Rwanda by
the end of the year.
The first batch
of electric buses is already en route and is expected to arrive in Kigali
within four weeks. This expansion comes on the heels of a highly successful
pilot program, which has generated overwhelming market demand, with BasiGo’s
reservation book currently standing at 361 units. The company’s ambitious plans
are set to transform Rwanda’s public transport system, reduce carbon emissions,
and pave the way for a greener future.
Rwanda has
emerged as a regional leader in creating an enabling environment for private
investment and innovation in electric mobility. BasiGo’s expansion is a
testament to the country’s commitment to sustainability and its vision for a
cleaner, more efficient public transport system. “Rwanda has created an
ideal environment for private investment and innovation in e-mobility,”
said a BasiGo spokesperson. “We are proud to lead the charge in accelerating
Rwanda’s transition to universal, electric public transport.”

The
introduction of 100 electric buses in Rwanda is expected to have a profound
environmental impact, cutting 3,000 tons of carbon emissions annually and
avoiding the combustion of 1.3 million liters of diesel each year. This aligns
with Rwanda’s broader goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting
sustainable development.
Beyond
environmental benefits, BasiGo’s electric buses will also contribute to
economic growth by creating jobs, reducing fuel costs for transport operators,
and improving air quality for citizens. “Our mission is to make electric
public transport accessible, affordable, and sustainable,” said the
spokesperson. “This is just the beginning. BasiGo will not stop until every
bus in Rwanda is electric.”
To support the
growing fleet of electric buses, BasiGo is upgrading its Charging and Service
Depot in Rwande to 1 MW of power, enabling the overnight charging of over 25
electric buses. Additionally, the company plans to build additional charging
sites across the country, ensuring that the infrastructure keeps pace with the
rapid expansion of its fleet.
BasiGo’s
expansion in Rwanda is part of a broader vision to revolutionize public
transport across Africa. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and innovative
business models, the company aims to make electric buses the standard for
public transport, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and creating a cleaner,
healthier future for all.
