The Governor of
the Bank of South Sudan, Johnny Ohisa Damian, has publicly endorsed MTN Mobile
Money (MoMo) as a transformative force in advancing financial inclusion across
the nation. During a high-level meeting at the central bank's headquarters,
Governor Damian commended the fintech platform's rapid growth since obtaining
its operational license in January 2024 and pledged full institutional support
for its nationwide expansion.
The Governor stressed
the critical need to extend digital financial services to South Sudan's rural
populations, urging MTN MoMo to amplify financial literacy campaigns. "Our
vision is to see every citizen, from urban centers to remote villages,
empowered through accessible mobile money solutions," stated Damian
during the engagement with MTN Fintech leadership.
MTN Fintech CEO
Francis Matseketsa presented key milestones achieved since the platform's
launch, including the implementation of rigorous governance structures
following the operational separation from MTN's core telecom business. The
establishment of a dedicated Fintech Board has strengthened regulatory
compliance and strategic oversight of mobile money services.
Mr. Matseketsa
highlighted two strategic priorities requiring central bank support:
accelerating licensing for betting operators to facilitate digital tax
collection, and integrating MoMo payments for utility providers like Juba
Electricity Distribution Company (JEDCO). "Digital payments present a
viable solution to cash flow constraints while improving revenue assurance for
critical services," the Fintech CEO explained.
