West African Internet Governance Forum 2024 kicks off in Abuja with call for inclusive digital growth

Nigeria's Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani has officially declared opened the 17th West African Internet Governance Forum (WAIGF) in Abuja. The Minister opened the high-profile event with a keynote address emphasizing regional cooperation for digital transformation under the theme "Building a Resilient, Inclusive and Safe Digital Future for West Africa." 

In his opening remarks, Dr. Tijani stressed the critical need for collaborative governance frameworks to support the region's growing digital economy while addressing cybersecurity challenges.

The event has drawn participation from across the region, including data protection experts, legislators, and heads of key digital institutions. Dr. Vincent Olatunji of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, represented by Mr. Ibitayo Olufemi, highlighted data security as a cornerstone of digital development, urging stakeholders to prioritize user protection in policy formulation. 

Notable attendees include Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, and Hon. Adedeji Stanley Oladeji from the House of Representatives. The forum also hosts delegates from Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal and Niger, reflecting West Africa's shared commitment to harmonized digital governance. 

With panel discussions and working sessions now underway, WAIGF 2024 aims to produce concrete strategies for enhancing internet accessibility, strengthening cyber resilience, and fostering responsible innovation across the region.
