The Data
Protection Commission of Ghana has taken a significant step toward
international cooperation on digital governance following a high-level meeting
with Türkiye’s Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Hüseyin Güngör. The discussions, led
by Dr. Arnold Kavaarpuo, Executive Director of Ghana’s Data Protection
Commission, centered on strengthening bilateral collaboration in data privacy,
artificial intelligence governance, and cross-border data flows.
The dialogue
addressed urgent global challenges posed by digital platforms, particularly
their influence on public discourse, economic activity, and individual privacy.
Dr. Kavaarpuo emphasized the need for robust regulatory frameworks to counter
risks such as automated profiling, opaque algorithms, and unchecked data
exploitation. “As digital interactions dominate daily life, protecting
citizens’ data rights requires proactive, cross-border cooperation,” he
stated.

Ambassador
Güngör, leveraging his expertise from leading Türkiye’s digital diplomacy
initiatives, highlighted the shared responsibility of nations to uphold ethical
standards in emerging technologies. The meeting explored mechanisms to enhance
transparency, accountability, and user control over personal data, aligning
with principles advocated by the Global Privacy Assembly (GPA).
The partnership
also reflects the deepening economic ties between Ghana and Türkiye, which saw
over US$173 million in Turkish investments in 2023. By integrating data
protection into this relationship, both countries aim to foster trust in
digital trade and innovation.
