The National
Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) has reinforced its commitment to
continental disaster resilience by renewing its partnership with the United
Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) through the UN-SPIDER
programme. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on July 1, 2025, marks
a new chapter in leveraging space technology for emergency response and
sustainable development across Africa.

NASRDA Director
General Dr. Matthew Adepoju emphasized the strategic importance of the
collaboration, stating: "This renewed partnership demonstrates our
joint resolve to harness space-based solutions for disaster mitigation and
sustainable growth." The agreement builds on years of successful
cooperation that has strengthened regional capacity in satellite-based early
warning systems, risk assessment, and post-disaster recovery support.
The enhanced
collaboration will focus on three critical areas: expanding technical training
for African space professionals, deploying advanced Earth observation tools for
climate-related emergencies, and developing tailored solutions for flood,
drought, and food security challenges. With Africa facing increasing climate
vulnerabilities, the partnership positions Nigeria as a regional hub for
space-enabled disaster management innovation.

This MoU
renewal comes as NASRDA prepares to launch new earth observation satellites,
which will significantly boost Africa's autonomous disaster monitoring
capabilities. The UN-SPIDER alliance ensures these space assets will serve
broader humanitarian objectives while supporting the UN's 2030 Agenda for
Sustainable Development.
