The International
Telecommunication Union (ITU) Regional Office for Africa has reaffirmed its
readiness to support the responsible use of artificial intelligence in
healthcare following the successful conclusion of the 76th Session of the WHO
Regional Committee for Africa.
Emmanuel Chifuel Manasseh,
ITU Regional Director for Africa, congratulated Prof. Mohamed Janabi on the
successful session, which was held under the leadership of Ethiopia’s Minister
of Health, H.E. Mekdes Daba Feyssa.
Manasseh highlighted the
launch of the Regional Health Data Hub as a significant outcome of the session,
particularly its focus on strengthening data-driven decision-making across
Africa’s health systems.
He also pointed to
discussions on harnessing artificial intelligence to strengthen primary
healthcare, underscoring the growing role of digital technologies and health
data in improving healthcare delivery.
According to Manasseh, the
ITU stands ready to support efforts to ensure that AI is applied responsibly in
healthcare and contributes to better decision-making and health outcomes.
