South Africa’s Council for
Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has emphasised the importance of
turning scientific research and technological innovation into commercial
products and services that can drive economic growth, strengthen state capability
and improve public service delivery.
The CSIR made the remarks
following a strategic engagement with Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana and
Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Prof. Blade Nzimande at the
research institution.
The visit provided an
opportunity for the CSIR to demonstrate how its research capabilities are being
translated into practical solutions addressing some of South Africa’s pressing
economic and societal challenges.
Demonstrations during the
engagement showcased capabilities in data analytics, logistics, pharmaceutical
innovation and advanced engineering, highlighting the institution’s role in
supporting economic growth, industrial competitiveness and more effective
public services.
The engagement also brought
together the two Ministers and CSIR researchers for discussions on the
importance of evidence-informed decision-making and stronger collaboration
across South Africa’s national system of innovation.
A key focus was the
commercialisation of intellectual property and technologies developed by the
CSIR. The institution stressed that effective commercialisation is essential to
converting investments in research and development into tangible economic and
societal benefits.
According to the CSIR,
commercialisation can create opportunities for industry, support the
establishment of new enterprises and ensure that technologies developed through
South African research contribute directly to national development.
The engagement reinforced
the broader message that investment in science, technology and innovation is an
investment in South Africa’s future prosperity.
The CSIR said it remains
committed to working with government, industry and society to harness science,
technology and innovation in building a more inclusive, prosperous and capable
South Africa.
The institution also
acknowledged the collaboration of officials from the Ministry and Department of
Science, Technology and Innovation, the National Treasury and CSIR teams in
facilitating the strategic engagement.
