South Africa has reaffirmed
the importance of scientific innovation in driving economic growth,
strengthening public services and building a capable developmental state,
following a high-level engagement between the Ministers of Science, Technology
and Innovation and Finance at the Council for Scientific and Industrial
Research (CSIR).
Minister of Science,
Technology and Innovation, Prof. Blade Nzimande, welcomed Minister of Finance
Enoch Godongwana to the CSIR on Monday for discussions on the future of South
Africa’s innovation economy.
The engagement focused on a
shared vision of placing innovation at the centre of national development and
public policy, with the CSIR highlighted as Africa’s premier public research
institution and a key contributor to the country’s scientific and technological
development.
A major area of discussion
was the role of innovation as an economic driver. Minister Godongwana affirmed
that scientific innovation is essential to helping South Africa navigate
current fiscal constraints by enabling government to deliver services more efficiently
while addressing complex societal challenges.
The ministers also discussed
the need for stronger strategic alignment between scientific capabilities and
national development priorities.
They agreed that advancing
South Africa’s capabilities in digital technologies, health, energy and
advanced manufacturing is directly linked to the development of a capable and
developmental state.
