The International
Telecommunication Union (ITU) and Brazilian telecommunications association
Abrint have formalised a new project in Brasília aimed at empowering girls and
young women through digital skills, innovation and entrepreneurship.
The initiative was
formalised by Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava, Director of the ITU Telecommunication
Development Bureau, and Breno Vale, President of Abrint, an ITU-D Sector
Member.
The project seeks to help
narrow the gender digital divide by expanding opportunities for girls and young
women to develop digital skills, pursue innovation and strengthen their
entrepreneurial capabilities.
The initiative forms part of
efforts to advance meaningful connectivity and scale the impact of digital
inclusion programmes as the ITU implements the outcomes of the World
Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC)-25.
Zavazava said the project
would contribute to the empowerment of girls and young women while supporting
broader efforts to address inequalities in access to and use of digital
technologies.
The initiative will also be
implemented within the framework of the WTDC-25 Baku Action Plan for 2026–2029,
which identifies resource mobilisation as a core pillar of implementation.
According to Zavazava,
resource mobilisation is essential to translating the Action Plan’s universal
connectivity objectives into tangible outcomes rather than serving merely as a
supporting activity.
