Côte d’Ivoire has stepped up
its campaign to regain a seat on the Council of the International
Telecommunication Union (ITU) for the 2027–2030 term, seeking a stronger role
in shaping global policy on telecommunications and digital technologies.
The country is presenting a
campaign agenda centred on digital inclusion, technological innovation,
opportunities for young people in the digital economy and efforts to reduce the
digital divide.
Abidjan is also pointing to
progress made in its digital transformation agenda, including investments in
telecommunications infrastructure, connectivity, cybersecurity, artificial
intelligence and digital financial services.
According to figures cited
by the ITU Secretary-General, Côte d’Ivoire recorded more than 58 million
mobile subscriptions and invested more than $446 million in its digital
ecosystem in 2024.
Côte d’Ivoire has previously
served on the ITU Council and is seeking to return to the body as it pushes for
greater participation in international discussions and decision-making on the
future of digital technology.
The country’s campaign is
also intended to strengthen the representation of African priorities in global
digital governance, particularly on issues affecting connectivity, innovation
and inclusive access to technology.
The election for the
2027–2030 Council term will take place during the ITU Plenipotentiary
Conference in Doha in November 2026.
For Côte d’Ivoire, the
campaign represents an effort to translate its progress in digital
transformation into greater international influence while contributing to
stronger African participation in shaping the rules and policies governing the
global digital ecosystem.
