The South African National
Space Agency (SANSA) has launched its inaugural Software and Systems
Engineering Bootcamp to enhance internal digital capability and support the
development of sustainable and sovereign technology systems for the country’s
space sector.
The week-long bootcamp began
on August 31, 2026, bringing together SANSA’s software engineering and
technical teams, alongside selected external service providers, to examine how
technology, data and people can be integrated to build future decision-support
systems.
Throughout the week, SANSA
engineers and technical specialists will work on system architectures, data
pipelines, infrastructure and cybersecurity, while identifying opportunities to
improve the performance, sustainability and scalability of the agency’s digital
platforms.
SANSA CEO Humbulani Mudau
said the initiative goes beyond technology and is intended to strengthen a
culture of collaboration, knowledge sharing, continuous learning and innovation
within the agency.
He said bringing SANSA’s
technical expertise together would strengthen its ability to develop, manage
and sustain strategic and sovereign capabilities while reducing unnecessary
dependence on external providers.
Mudau said building internal
capability is particularly important as SANSA expands the application of space
science and technology across Earth Observation, Space Engineering, Space
Science and Space Operations.
Strengthening in-house
expertise, he added, would help the agency retain institutional knowledge and
establish a sustainable digital ecosystem capable of supporting innovative
solutions across these areas.
The initiative forms part of
SANSA’s broader efforts to ensure that innovation extends beyond individual
projects or technology platforms by building the people, systems and
institutional capabilities required to turn innovation into lasting national
capacity and impact.
SANSA said it remains open
to partnerships and collaborations that can advance innovation, develop
technical talent and contribute to building a capable, ethical and
developmental state.
